Madelyn Neff’s 18 points led the Hayward Hurricanes to a 47-34 win over the Superior High School girls basketball team Tuesday night in the SHS gym.

The Hurricanes, 19-2 on the season and the No. 1 seed in upcoming WIAA Division 3 playoffs, also got nine points apiece from Ellie Strapon and Emily Neff.

Chloe Kintop and Niya Wilson led the Spartans with eight points apiece.

Superior quickly found itself trailing 10-2 thanks in part to 3-pointers by Trinity Myer and Strapon.

The Hurricanes eventually led by nine points three different times and then by 10 points (22-12) on two free throws by Myer and a basket by M. Neff.

A basket by Sophie Kintop and two free throws by C. Kintop got the Spartans within 23-16 at the half.

Hayward opened up a 28-19 lead four minutes into the second half before 3-pointers by Wilson and Maddy Myer got the Spartans within 30-25 with 11:40 remaining.

That would be the closest the Spartans would get as Hayward scored the next four points and then eventually took a pair of 13-point leads, including the final score of 47-34, on a Strapon basket with just over a minute remaining.

Superior (9-12)  wraps up the regular season by hosting Duluth Denfeld at 7:15 p.m. Monday.

The Spartans are the No. 12 seed in the Division 1 sectional and play at No. 5 Appleton East on Friday, Feb. 23.
