UWS women win third straight UMAC title

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team clinched its third straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season championship with a 59-43 win over Northwestern Wednesday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

UWS improves to 14-0 this season in league play and is a perfect 46-0 (50-0 including playoff games) against UMAC teams since joining the conference in 2015-16.

This title is the first under interim head coach Zach Otto-Fisher, who took over the Yellowjacket program from Don Mulhern.

Hannah Norlin led the Yellowjackets Wednesday night with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also collected a game-high eight rebounds.

Former Superior Spartan Hailey Kontny was also in double-digits, getting 12 points and four steals for UWS, which forced 25 turnovers, 11 of which were steals.

Taryn Tumbleson and Rio Landers led Northwestern with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

In addition to a third championship in as many seasons, the Yellowjackets have also secured the No. 1 seed in the UMAC postseason tournament and will host a UMAC semifinal contest Wednesday, Feb. 21.

The Yellowjackets are 19-4 overall and currently on an 11-game winning streak. All four of their losses came in 2017.

Against UMAC opponents this season, the Yellowjackets average the second-most points per game (72.5 ppg) and outscored their opponents by a conference-best 25.1 ppg. They also boast a league-best defense holding opponents under a remarkable 47.7 ppg.

Superior also boasts a league-high rebounding average at 45.4 per game and the only double-digit rebounding margin that tops 12.4 per game. It als o tops the conference in turnover margin (8.21).

Kontny, the reigning back-to-back UMAC Player of the Year, leads the team in scoring (16.8 ppg) and is fourth among all UMAC players. Norlin is also among the top 15 UMAC scorers averaging 12.4 ppg. Both players average over six rebounds per game.

The Yellowjackets play at Bethany Lutheran Saturday before wrapping up the regular season by hosting North Central on Feb. 17. Both games begin at 5 p.m.
