YELLOWJACKET ROUND-UP: UWS women win 43rd straight UMAC contest

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team improved to 43-0 since joining the UMAC in 2015 with an 87-71 win over Martin Luther Saturday in New Ulm. Minn.

Former Spartan Hailey Kontny led UWS with 15 points and five assists. Jade Tucker added 13 points and 11 rebounds, Hannah Norlin had 12 points and blocked two shots, and Eva Reinertsen chipped in with 12 points.

The Knights’ Grace Schultz led all scorers with 24 points.

UWS (16-4, 11-0) plays at St. Scholastica at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and hosts Crown at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s hockey

UWS went 1-1 in WIAC action over the weekend at Wessman Arena, defeating UW-Stout 4-2 Friday and losing to UW-Eau Claire Saturday.

In Friday’s win, the Yellowjackets got two goals from Andrew Dunham, one goal apiece from Ian Ecklund and former Superior Spartans Daniel Litchke and 17 saves from Cole Skinner.

Tommi Ahlgren had 12 saves for Stout (5-13-2, 2-2).

Superior’s Tanner Skaja scored the only goal of the first period Saturday, but UWEC scored the next four goals until Ecklund notched his team-leading 14th goal on a third-period power play.

Skinner finished with 24 saves for UWS (8-11-2, 1-2-1) and Zach Dyment had 13 saves for UWEC (14-8, 3-2).

UWS plays at UW-River Falls Friday and hosts UW-Stevens Point Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Women’s hockey

UWS was swept by UW-River Falls by scores of 7-5 Friday on the road and 5-0 at Wessman Arena Saturday afternoon.

Saige Patrick scored twice and Kaleigh Martinson had two assists for UWS in Friday’s loss.

The Falcons led 3-0 before UWS scored three straight goals.

The teams traded two third-period goals to keep the game tied at 5-5 before Erica Schramel scored twice within 54-seconds late in third period.

Five different Falcons scored goals in Saturday shut out of UWS, including former Superior Spartan Sam Young, who scored her seventh goal of the season 47 seconds into the game.

The seventh-ranked Falcons are now 15-4-2 overall, 5-1-1 WIAC, while UWS falls to 14-7-1, 3-3-1.

UWS hosts UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 9 and 10.

Women’s tennis

UWS made its debut with the women losing to Minnesota Duluth 9-0 Saturday evening at home.

The Yellowjackets then made history Sunday afternoon with a singles and doubles victory in a 7-2 loss to Concordia Moorhead.

The first UWS win came at No. 1 doubles where Alison Tollas and Mariah Linder won 8-3.

The second point for the Yellowjackets came at No. 2 singles by Emily Wald, who won 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

The UWS men made its debut Sunday with a 9-0 loss to Concordia Moorhead.

Both UWS teams host St. Mary’s at 3 p.m. Saturday.
