Buzzer beaters

The Superior High School boys and University of Wisconsin-Superior men both pulled off victories over the weekend with game-winning 3-point buzzer beaters.

The Spartans were first as Mason Ackley’s 3-pointer gave Superior a 61-58 win over the Cloquet Lumberjacks Friday night in Cloquet.

Vid Milenkovic’s game-winning shot came in overtime Saturday as the Yellowjackets defeated Martin Luther 76-73 in New Ulm, Minn.

Spartans

With the score tied 58-58 Ackley took the the inbounds pass underneath Cloquet’s basket, dribbled abound a defender and nailed the game-winning basket from the top of the key.

Ackley and Ben Rhodes led the Spartans with 18 points apiece, while Tim Pokornowski and Bryce Turnbull scored 19 and 18, respectively, for the Lumberjacks.

Superior also used a well-balance offensive attack to knock off the Duluth East Greyhounds Thursday night in Duluth.

Xavier Patterson led the Spartans with 11 points, followed by Rhodes and Ackley with nine points apiece, and Cam Borgh and Beau Severson with eight points each.

Noah Winesett led East with 12 points.

The Spartans (6-8 overall, 2-2 LSC) have three games this week. They host Proctor tonight, play at Duluth Denfeld Thursday and host Bemidji Friday. All three games begin at 7:15 p.m.

Yellowjackets

Milenkovic had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Yellowjackets (5-15, 3-8 UMAC), who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Shaq Coleman also had 18 points, followed by Colton Williams, 16 points; Montroy Scott, 11 points; and Mac Reykdal, 10 points.

Austin DeNoyer had 24 points and Ian Paulsen added 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Knights (2-17, 1-10).

The Knights held a one-point lead with 35 seconds remaining in overtime, but a Williams’ free tied the game at 73-73.

The final possession came to Coleman, who drove the lane and had his shot blocked off the backboard. The ball went right to Milenkovic on the left wing, where he drained the three as time expired.

The Yellowjackets shot the ball well from the field, 51 percent on the game, and well from the line, going 21-of-33.

UWS plays at St. Scholastica at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
