Tiger girls fall in Wood City title game

The Northwestern High School girls basketball team lost to the host Cloquet Lumberjacks 51-42 in the title game of the Wood City Classic Thursday evening in Cloquet.

The Tigers defeated Fond du Lac Ojibwe 93-20 in the semifinals Wednesday evening, while Allie Wojtysiak’s 3-pointer with 4.1 seconds remaining gave the Lumberjacks a 60-59 win over Blake.

After falling behind by 21 points, the Tigers rattled off 19 straight points to get within 34-32.

But that would be as close as Northwestern was get.

Against Fond du Lac, the Tigers, who led 50-14 at the half, had five girls score in double figures, led by Mac Correll’s 20 points. Katie Lundeen and Kasha Hughlett both had 16 points and Sam Hoegen and Sydney Anderson both had 10.

Kayla Reynolds led Fond du Lac Ojibwe with 12 points.

The Northwestern boys are playing in the Rice Lake Tournament.

The Tigers played Ashland Thursday night, followed by Osceola vs. Rice Lake.

The third-place and championship games are Friday.

The Tigers are competing in the River Falls Invitational Thursday and today.
