Zeigle powers Hayward past Northwestern
The Hayward Hurricanes needed scoring from just three different players in their 61-50 win over the Northwestern Tigers Tuesday night in Hayward.
Phil Zeigle was a one-man wrecking crew for Hayward with 35 points, which included seven 3-pointers and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
The Hurricanes also got 19 points from Riley Dobbs and seven points from Craig Burger.
The Tigers had three players in double figures, led by Greg Ruhman’s 15 points. Brody Payton added 12 points and Kade Bartelt had 10.
After Hayward held a 26-23 halftime lead, the second half included a number of runs by both teams.
With the score tied 40-40, Hayward scored five straight points only to see Northwestern answer with six straight of its own for a 46-45 lead.
The Hurricanes answered themselves with nine straight for a 54-46 lead and then eventually sealed the victory down the stretch at the free-throw line.
Northwestern plays at Barron at 7:15 p.m. today and then will play in the Rice Lake Tournament Dec. 28-29. The Tigers open against Ashland at 5 p.m. Thursday. The other semifinal is Rice Lake vs. Osceola at 7 p.m.
