Solon Springs boys win two more games; Eagle girls split

The Solon Springs High School boys basketball team remained undefeated with a pair of recent home victories.

The Eagles defeated the Frederic Vikings 68-48 on Dec. 7 then downed the Mercer Bears 80-57 on Monday.

Jens Gehl led the Eagles (4-0) in both games with 18 points against Frederic and 24 against Mercer.

Adding to Solon Springs’ total against Frederic were Chase Latvala, 10 points; Caden Smith, nine points; and Alex Hunter and Nick Zosel with eight points apiece.

Steven Hall, Logan Lillehaug and Caleb Schott all score 11 points for Frederic (0-4).

Against Mercer, Solon Springs also got 16 points from Zosel, 12 from Smith, and 11 from Latvala.

Alex Schmidt’s 24 points for Mercer included five 3-point baskets.

Solon Springs, which hosted Bayfield Thursday, plays at South Shore at 7:15 p.m. Monday.

Girls hoops

The Eagle girls rebounded from a 64-48 loss to the Bayfield Trollers on Friday, Dec. 8, with a 50-25 win over the Mercer Bears Monday.

Bayfield (4-0, 2-0) made 10 3-pointers in its win over Solon Springs with Lindsay Bressette hitting four of them among her game-high 18 points.

Bressette scored 12 points in the second half. Janelle Gordon added three 3-pointers and 13 points for the Trollers, and Joslyn Beaulieu-Newago had a pair of triples and 12 points. Savannah Duffy also had 12 points.

Solon Springs’ Morgan Anderson led all scorers with 30 points, which included six 3-pointers.

The Eagles cruised past Mercer, including opening up a 30-12 halftime lead.

Anderson once again led all scorers with 19 points. Dominique Orozco was next with nine points, and Kylli Rajala added eight.

The Eagles play at South Shore at 7:15 p.m. today .
