Spartans drop pair at ECM
The Superior High School baseball team dropped a pair of games to Eau Claire Memorial Saturday at Carson Park.
The host Old Abes won the opener 7-0 then completed the sweep with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
ECM freshman pitcher Vince Trapani was perfect over six innings in the opener. He retired the first nine batters before Ben Rhodes and Isaac Rios singled in the fourth inning.
Trapani retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings before giving way to Jack Piper, who gave up hits to Derek and David Fender in the seventh inning.
Spencer Udeen, Mason Moen and Derek Fender pitched for Superior, allowing eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Memorial got only five hits in the second game but got help from Superior as all four runs were unearned, including three in the fifth inning.
Superior took a 2-1 lead in the second when Will Schorr and Dom D’Auria walked and scored on Devin Samarzia’s ground out and Conner Fonger’s single, respectively.
Judd Erickson scored Superior’s third run when he walked and scored on a double steal with Fonger.
Fonger had two of Superior’s three hits. Rios had the other.
Memorial struggled at the plate off starter Drake Samarzia, who allowed just three hits into the fifth. Brandon Wing came on and took the loss.
