UW-Superior seniors named UMAC Scholar Athlete finalists
The University of Wisconsin-Superior has one male and one female student-athlete on the ballot for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Scholar Athlete Leadership Award.
Seniors Charles Corbett (Park Falls, Wis.) and Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis.) are finalists for the 2016 honor. Nine female athletes and eight male athletes from the conference are eligible for the award this year.
The UMAC Scholar-Athlete Leadership Award is presented to student-athletes who embody what it means to be an NCAA Division III student-athlete. Through the award, the UMAC recognizes the role athletics play in developing leaders by rewarding athletes’ excellence in the classroom as well as service to the community.
“Awards like this, that recognize academics and leadership, are more important to our department than the ones that student-athletes receive for their athletic performance,” said Nick Bursik, UWS athletics director. “I’m extremely proud of Charles and Allie for all of their hard work and dedication to the university, the community, and their teams and for being tremendous representatives for our department.”
Corbett has excelled in both cross country and in track and field so far this spring.
Corbett qualified for the 2015 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in November and placed 23rd, earning All-American honors. He also claimed the 2015 UMAC Championship on his way to UMAC Runner of the Year, All-UMAC and All-Central Region honors.
During the indoor track and field season he set numerous school and conference records and won four UMAC championships.
Nelson has competed in three sports at UWS, playing four seasons of women’s basketball, two seasons of softball and one season of women’s golf.
She was named All-UMAC following the 2015 golf season where she helped the Yellowjackets to a conference championship and a trip to the national tournament. On the hard court, she helped the Yellowjackets win their second straight conference championship, the UMAC playoff championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Corbett and Nelson have also earned multiple academic honors during their time at UWS.
Winners of the UMAC Scholar Athlete Leadership Award will be announced Wednesday.
