All-area volleyball team includes three Spartans, a Tiger, Eagle and Evergreen

Joining Jessica Lindstrom on the 2013 Superior Telegram All-Area Team are three seniors and two juniors.

Also nominated were junior Brianna Larson and sophomore Phoenix Thomas of Solon Springs; sophomores Lexi Janigo and Daisy Mack of Northwestern; and senior Jessie Pluntz of Superior.

Erin Gotelaere


With a roster full of young players, the Northwestern High School volleyball team leaned heavily on senior Erin Gotelaere this season.

"Erin has been a great leader on the team," said Tanya Amys, NHS head coach. "We had a very young team this year consisting of seven sophomores. Erin was a good role model to all of the girls on and off the court."

Gotelaere was named to the 2013 Heart O' North All-Conference first team as an outside hitter. She had 267 digs and 103 kills for the season.

"She worked extremely hard during the season and in the offseason and showed tremendous improvement over last year," Amys said. "At only 5-foot-6 she has a great vertical. Overall, Erin is a great athlete and a great person on and off the court."

Gotelaere also received the NHS coaches' award this season and was named the team MVP.

Ashley Johnson

Solon Springs

Senior Ashley Johnson stepped up as a team leader for the Solon Springs Eagles this season.

"Ashley is a very hard worker and was always focused on getting better in practice," said Marcus Besonen, Solon Springs head coach. "She was our go to girl on offense when we needed a point and she would most often deliver."

Johnson led the Eagles in aces and kills this season as an outside hitter. She was also a team captain and leader on the floor, Besonen said.

"She was very crafty at the net utilizing a variety of hits and tips to get a point any way possible," he said. "She will be missed and very hard to replace as she has been a three-year starter on varsity."

Johnson was an honorable mention selection on this year's Indianhead Conference All-Conference team.

Nicole Sorensen


Nicole Sorensen was Superior's ace in the hole this season.

The junior had a .915 serving percentage and finished the season with 88 ace serves.

"She is a great motivator," said Brenda Pluntz, head coach of the Spartans.

As a setter, Sorensen had 368 set assists, with an average of 3.9 assists per game.

Sorensen was a team captain for the Spartans this season and was named to the Lake Superior Conference All-Conference second team.

Ellen Stromgren


Ellen Stromgren formed the second half of Superior's offensive attack this season.

The senior was a reliable threat at left hitter kept teams off-balanced at the net.

Stromgren finished the season with 131 kills (1.5 per game) and 115 digs (1.3 per game). She also had a .941 serving percentage for Superior.

McKayla Waggoner


"McKayla was a captain and team leader," said Geri Scheller, head coach of the Evergreens. "She led by example by working hard and trying to do everything that was asked of her."

Waggoner, a junior, had a .885 serving percentage, .768 passing percentage and .885 setting percentage. She also had a .158 kill percentage as an outside hitter.

"She led the team in hitting, serving and passing percentages," Scheller said. "She was dedicated and always gave me her best."
