More military madness
Will it ever stop? Will we ever stop spending so much of our national treasure on the military, let alone our young folks lives, and inhibiting medical memories? We claim to have a democracy — of the people, by the people and for the people. Is any country threatening us? Is an enemy threatening to take over Canada or Mexico, and appear to be coming after us next?
Or has Chris Hedges diagnosed our problem correctly — the corporate power elite or globalized corporate elite is calling the shots these days. President Eisenhower warned us earlier, and he truly had the know from experience as former World War II general and president. He warned us about the military industrial complex (in his speech as retiring president). It has also been called since by the publication, the Defense Monitor. Military contractors receive higher profits for lower risk work than comparable commercial business. Top contractors are heavily subsidized by the taxpayers using many billions worth of government property free of charge."
We should be tending our very important fences at home. Our infrastructure is in sad disrepair. Our educational system could advantageously spend more money, especially in low tax areas where low income means less tax in the very areas of need. Many other phases will quickly come to mind when and if we ever have the wherewithal to focus on our positive needs.
Any evidence that we are spending money foolishly, Jim Hightower recently wrote, after 16 years (the longest war in our history) we have had more than 2,000 killed, 20,000 maimed, and more than $800 billion spent on it. Does the future look brighter for the civilian view of war? Trump has surrounded himself with generals. What do you think?
The truth finally came out about the Vietnam War when the Pentagon papers surfaced, as did the phony Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Thanks to Walter Cronkite, news reporter, the final truths came out, about another war that shouldn't have been. Who paid the final price — 3 million people total and 57 Americans.
Is the military industrial complex fulfilling Martin Luther King's words, via George Orwell's words of wisdom on war: "War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it."
