Tell Duffy: Support North Country Trail
The North Country National Scenic Trail is a great recreational attraction in the Northland. Hikers, joggers, skiers and hunters use the trail to enjoy our northern woods. The trail is used year around by local people and tourists. It runs across four counties in far northern Wisconsin. National trails are good for all of us, tourism and the economy.
One would think the trail would be supported by everyone. But Congressman Duffy is obstructing improvements to the trail. For many years, trail supporters have been asking Congress to authorize a merger of the North Country Trail with the existing Lake Superior Trail in Minnesota. Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., is refusing to support this legislation.
This simple administrative action would cost taxpayers nothing. The merger would actually save money and volunteer efforts — the trail is built and maintained by volunteers. The bill does not acquire more land, request money or transfer land ownership to the federal government (as Duffy claims). This bill simply links the two trails. It improves efficiency, maximizes volunteer effort and leverages National Park Service support to benefit Wisconsin and Minnesota. This is a win-win for everyone.
I have volunteered over 2,000 hours building and maintaining the North Country Trail in Wisconsin. I ask Rep. Duffy to do his part by supporting the Route Adjustment Act (HR 1026). I ask you to help support the many hard-working volunteers who build the trail by contacting Rep. Duffy. Tell him to support the North Country Trail.
