Kenneth DeSmet

Kenneth Lee DeSmet, age 83, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at his residence in Solon Springs, WI. He was born August 10, 1934 in Moline, IL, the son of Henry Camiel and Rachael Laura (Claerhout) DeSmet. He was united in marriage to Anna Louise Hagan on July 8, 1953 in Rock Island, IL.

Ken served his country during World War II by welding lugs for bombs with the John Deere Company in Moline. He ran a dairy farm outside of Barneveld, WI for several years and was a real estate broker and appraiser there as well. Ken and Anna retired to Solon Springs, WI in June of 1997 to enjoy their retirement on Long Lake.

He and Anna both were pilots and spent many hours together flying. Ken was an avid outdoorsman and hunted both deer and bear and enjoyed fly fishing both in Wisconsin and out West. He was a charter member of the Badger Fly Fishers, a fly fishing club that he also served as president. Ken also loved dogs, especially his Brittany spaniels.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna of Solon Springs; his children, Christine (Robert Boetzer) DeSmet of Madison, WI, Curtis (Debbie) DeSmet of Hollandale, WI, Timothy (Debra) DeSmet of Plain, WI, Laura (Stephen) Baima of McKinney, TX and Mark (Margaret) DeSmet of Barneveld, WI; his grandchildren, Cory, Aaron, Travis, Joshua, Cheyenne, Kimberly, Erin, Morgan, Andrew, Ryan, Matthew and Jonathan; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom (Janet) DeSmet of Rock Island, IL and Dennis (Cheryl) DeSmet of Moline, IL; a sister, Janet (Jerry) Lydon of East Moline, IL; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

All services and interment will be held privately.

The family thanks the many caregivers and friends who helped Dad over the years and especially during the last few months. Dad never lost his zest for life or his ability to joke around. He enjoyed a brew with his family on the deck overlooking the lake the day before he died.
