Chester Butterfield



Chester Philip Butterfield, 92, of Wascott, WI, passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 in Duluth, MN at St. Mary's Hospital surrounded by family. He took his last breath as his loving wife of 58 years, Jeanette, held his hand and softly sang "Amazing Grace" accompanied by his granddaughter Angela.

Chester was born the 5th of 13 children to Jesse and Edith (Sharbonda) Butterfield in the small town of Shovel Lake, MN on June 11, 1925. He was a WWII Army Veteran, serving as an MP in security. He was proud of his service to his country and was a long-time member of the American Legion in Gordon, WI. He met and married the love of his life, Jeanette Rose Jones in 1958. Together they spent many wonderful years working side by side for Penta Wood Products and raising their family. Chester was an avid outdoorsman, spending many hours hunting, fishing, trapping, and tending his large vegetable garden. He also enjoyed watching football (Go Packers!), CNN, old westerns, and detective shows. Chester always made time for his children and grandchildren often times surprising them with a new tire swing or tree fort. He was a gifted storyteller, an enthusiastic checker player, and a patient teacher of cards. Chester was hard-working, generous, kind man with a gentle soul. A loving father, husband, and grandfather, Chester was beloved by all who knew him. To his family, Chester was a true hero.

Chester is survived by: his wife Jeanette of Wascott, WI, 4 children; Cheryl (Jim) Searle of Superior, WI, Clara (Rick) Hill of Minong, WI, Charlotte Behn of Duluth, MN, and Edward (Rene) Butterfield of Solon Springs, 11 grandchildren; Chris Hill, Deana (Luke) Sandberg, Rick Hill, Mike Searle, Rosie Searle, Emily (Gunnar) Peterson, Angela Valine, Joey Searle, Alan Behn, Andrew Behn, and Jenny (Tim) Motschman, 18 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, a sister Dora Wickware of Springbrook, I, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents Jesse and Edith and 11 siblings; Paul, Laura, Elmer, Albert, Gladys, Violet, Helen, Stanley, Larry, Jimmy, and Jeanette.

A tribute to Chester's life will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 11:00 am at The First Presbyterian Church in Gordon, WI, with Leslie Anderson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at a later date at The Wascott Cemetery. Full military honors will be performed at the church, following the service.
