Laila E. Magnuson

Laila E. Magnuson, 87, longtime Brule resident, died Sunday, July 9, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital Hospice in Duluth, MN. She was born on October 22, 1929 in the Town of Brule to Elias and Hilda (Kauppinen) Ronkainen.

Laila earned a two-year teaching diploma from Superior State Teacher's College in 1949 and began her teaching career at Bennett Grade School. She moved to the Maple School District in 1952 and retired 38 years later in 1989. A life-long learner, she continued her education while teaching, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1960 from Wisconsin State College, and a Master of Science Degree in Education in 1977 from The University of Wisconsin-Superior.

She was an active member of the Brule Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder; Old-Brule Heritage Society, Inc.; Alpha Delta Kappa; and Bayfield County Home and Community Education.

Laila is survived by granddaughter, Melissa (Ryan) Haworth, Hawthorne, WI; grandson, Matthew (Stephanie) Jahn, Proctor, MN; four great-grandchildren, Peyton, Brady, Eligh, and Izack; three step-grandchildren, Michael, Emily, and Aiden; son-in-law Michael Jahn; brother Richard (Lila) Ronn; sister Karen (Jerry) Bridge; and many nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth; daughter Susanne "Susie" Jahn; and brothers Elmer Ronkainen, Ernest Ronn, Wilbert Ronkainen, and Walter Ronn.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, July 21, 2017 at Brule Presbyterian Church and also on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Church until the 2:00 PM Funeral service with Pastor Richard Blood officiating.

If desired, memorials may be made to the Brule Presbyterian Church or to Old-Brule Heritage Society, Inc.

A family graveside service will be held at the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Brule, WI, at a later date.
