Tigers win regional crown, send 8 wrestlers to sectionals

The Northwestern High School wrestling team was a double winner when it hosted the WIAA Division 2 Regional Tournament on Saturday.

The Tigers finished in first place as a team and earned the right to compete in the Division 2 Team Sectional at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Hayward.

The semifinal matches at 6 p.m. are Northwestern vs. Spencer/Columbus Catholic and Somerset vs. Ellsworth with the winners meeting at 8 p.m.

The winner advances to the state team tournament March 3 in Madison.

The Tigers also had eight individuals advance to Saturday’s sectional in Amery.

First-place finishers for Northwestern were Tjay Ziebarth (120 pounds); Calen Kirkpatrick (138); Donny Pooler (170); and Morgan Berggren (285).

Ziebarth improved to 17-12 with a pin of Ashland’s Darren Tippett and a 15-3 win over Jayden Windsor of Hayward/Northwood; Kirkpatrick (27-5) received a pair of byes before pinning Tim Coyne (Hayward/North); Pooler (18-3) also received two pins then pinned Barron’s Tony Candler and defeated Rice Lake’s Callub Paulson, 3-2; and Berggren (25-4) pinned Barron’s McCade Miller and Ashland’s Brennan Corbine.

Finishing in second place for the Tigers were Braden Trautt (113); Brody Burke (132); Zach Pooler (145); and Andrew Hanson (182).

The top three finishers at Saturday’s sectional meet will advance to the state tournament Feb. 22-23 in Madison.
