UWS ROUND-UP: Seven in a row

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 6-3 win over the St. Scholastica Saints Wednesday night at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets improved to 11-4 overall with the win and haven’t lost since a 5-1 setback on Nov. 21 at Augsburg.

Mikayla Gooding led UWS in its later win with a pair of goals. Her first goal came 17 seconds into the game. Then, when the Saints railed to get within 4-3, she helped seal the victory with her ninth goal of the season with 40 seconds left in the third period.

Megan Dulong also scored a goal and recorded two assists for UWS which outshot St. Scholastica 51-19. Also netting goals were Amanda Sergent, Kaleigh Martinson and Agnese Apsite.

Martinson leads UWS in goals scored with 12. Goodin has a team-best 10 saves.

Sky Brown finished with 16 saves for UWS and Lori Huseby and Lexi Thomeczek combined on 45 saves for the Saints.

The Saints, who fall to 6-3-4 and are winless in their past four games, got goals from Abby Sawyer, Mac Johnson and Rachel Anderson.

UWS plays at Finlandia at 1 p.m. (CT) Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.

After a non-conference game Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus, the Yellowjackets will play six straight conference games before wrapping up the regular season Feb. 13 at St.  Scholastica.

Men’s basketball

The Yellowjackets got out to a hot start against Northwestern Wednesday night in St. Paul, but the Eagles stormed back in the second half to defeat UWS 74-69.

The Yellowjackets, who led 32-29 at the half, got a game-high 29 points from Shaq Coleman, who made 11 of his 12 field-goal attempts and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line while adding eight rebounds.

UWS also got 11 points apiece from Colton Williams and Montroy Scott.

UWS (4-12, 2-5) plays at North Central at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Women’s basketball

Junior forward Hannah Norlin had 22 points and 13 rebounds at UWS defeated the Northwestern Eagles 63-40 Wednesday night at Ericksen Center in St. Paul.

Former Superior Spartan Hailey Kontny added 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Yellowjackets, and Eva Reinertsen added nine points off the bench.

UWS, which is 39-0 since entering the league in 2015, improves to 11-4 overall and 7-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

UWS plays North Central at 5 p.m. Saturday in Minneapolis.
