Gary Edson Hooker

Gary Edson Hooker, 86, of Superior, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9 surrounded by family and loved ones.

Born February 20, 1931 in Superior to Frank "Ed" and Doris (Olson) Hooker, Gary was a lifelong South Superior resident.

After graduating from Central High School in 1949, Gary became employed by the Northern Pacific Railway, which would be the start of a life-long career and a passion for trains.

He served with the U.S. Army Transportation Corp. Railroad Battalion from 1953-55, at Fort Eustis, VA., afterwards returning to his career with the railroad. Gary retired as an Engineer with BNSF in October of 1997 after 47 years of service, still proud and passionate about his work. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and NARVE #259640 Unit 92.

Gary and the former Judith A. Rackliff were united in marriage on August 4, 1956 and they recently celebrated sixty-one years of marriage before his passing.

Gary enjoyed his family, work, snowmobiles and motorcycles. He especially enjoyed spending time with his brother and best friend, John. He also enjoyed watching his grandson Brett play baseball from tee-ball thru Superior Reds - rarely missing a game or practice, you could always find Gary at the ball field! He was a kind, hardworking and generous man who was loved and will be missed by many.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Gail.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, Uncle and friend, Gary is survived by his wife Judy; son, David; daughter, Jill (Dennis) Austin; grandchildren, Brett Austin, Joe (Amanda) Austin and Jamie (Mark) Sherlock and great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Andrew Bonacci and Caleb Austin; sister, Gloria Simonson; brother, John (Jean) Hooker; sister-in-law, Kay (Bill) Koski; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Holy Assumption Catholic Church, 5601 Tower Avenue, Superior, and will continue until the 11:30 AM funeral service with Rev. Fr. Ron Olson officiating.

John Hooker, Maris Freiman and Bill Koski will be recognized as honorary pallbearers.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Superior, where military honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
