With their first NCAA Division III tournament berth secured, the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer team was awarded the right to play at No. 5-ranked St. Thomas at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Paul.

The Tommies (19-1) ran their season win streak to 16 with Saturday’s 5-2 comeback win over Macalester in the MIAC playoff finals.

UST has won 15 in a row at home, including six postseason wins in 2016 and 2017, and are 29-3 in their last 32 games.

The Tommies are 2-1 against teams in the 2017 NCAA Division III playoffs, all on the road, including a 2-0 loss at Capital (Ohio), a 2-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan, and a 3-0 win over UW-Platteville.

“They are going to be tough,” UWS coach Joe Mooney said. “There are 62 teams in the tournament, and they’re all good. I think we match up with them very well.

“We lost to them in overtime on an own goal at their place last year so I think it adds a little fuel for our guys to get another shot at them. I’m anticipating a great game.”

Superior hasn’t played St. Thomas this season but is 3-5 against MIAC teams.

The other opening-round game at UST’s South Field is between Loras (13-5-1) (Iowa) and Cal Lutheran (13-4-2) at 1:30 p.m. The winners will play at 1 p.m. Sunday.

UWS secured its first NCAA tournament berth with a penalty-kick shootout win over the St. Scholastica Saints.

The Yellowjackets are led in scoring by Jon Bucklew (11 goals, six assists) and Eric Watson (12 goals, three assists).

UWS’s roster also includes Blake Doyea, the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, and Jonah Garcia, the UMAC defensive player of the year.

Doyea is third in scoring with seven goals and three assists.

Garcia anchored a defense that recorded six shutouts and held conference opponents to just eight goals.

Additionally, he also tallied three goals and six points in conference games to help the Yellowjackets to a third-straight second-place finish in the standings.

Bucklew leads all UMAC players as the only individual to earn first-team honors for three-consecutive seasons and Watson was one of seven other players to earn their second-straight All-UMAC award.

Other Yellowjackets with first-team honors are were junior Fernando Bicalho (MF), senior Jon Bucklew (F), Garcia (D), and Eric Watson (F).

Second-team picks are junior Adrian Leal (MF) and senior Gunnar O’Neill-Sengbush (D).

Senior Nick Piazza was also UWS’s pick for the UMAC sportsmanship award.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: UWS and St. Thomas have nine common opponents, including St. Scholastica. UWS lost to the Saints 2-1 and defeated them in a shootout. St. Thomas defeated the Saints 1-0. … The Tommies also have wins over Northwestern, St. Mary’s, Gustavus Adolphus, Hamline, Macalester, Augsburg, Bethel and Concordia-Moorhead. UWS also defeated Concordia-Moorhead, Bethel, Macalester and Northwestern, but lost to the remaining teams, including one-goal losses to five of them.
