Salvation Army kicks off kettle campaign

Bells will be ringing, people will be singing and hot dogs will be grilling today at the Super One Foods store at 1515 Oakes Ave. during the Salvation Army of Superior's kettle campaign kick-off.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Passers-by can purchase grilled hot dogs, brats, chips and pop. Free hot cocoa and cookies will be available.

Funds raised during the annual campaign cover an array of local programs, from the food pantry and rental assistance to ministry programs and the Rookie Basketball Association. It is, said Captain Jasen Elcombe, the "bread and butter" budget for the faith-based organization, which supports those in need.

"Everything donated in Douglas County stays in Douglas County," said Elcombe, who helms the Salvation Army of Superior with his wife, Kimberly, also a captain.

Last year, the community pulled together to raise $62,602.96 during the campaign, exceeding the Superior branch's $50,000 goal.

This year, the goal is set at $55,000.

Bell ringers are needed to stand by kettles and encourage donations. Volunteers sign up for a minimum of two hours, and can bring their own flair to the job.

"You can sing songs, play an instrument or do something creative," Elcombe said.

Bell ringing at both Superior Super One Foods stores begins Friday; after Thanksgiving, additional spots will be available at Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Younkers.

Cold doesn't have to prevent people from volunteering. Both Super One locations offer indoor spots.

To sign up, call Elcombe at (715) 969-7345, visit www.TinyURL.com/SuperiorKettles or www.salvationarmywi.org/wum/superior. Online donations are also being taken.

Toys, coats offered

Free coats for all ages will be distributed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Salvation Army of Superior, 916 Hughitt Ave. Nearly 1,400 coats were collected this year as part of the annual Coats for Kids drive. The Salvation Army is the only distribution site in the Twin Ports.

Sign-ups for Christmas food baskets and toys for children in need will take place through Dec. 8 at the Salvation Army. You must be a resident of Douglas County to be eligible for the holiday help.

Applications will be taken from 10 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Residents can also sign up from 4-6 p.m. Thursday. Toys will be distributed Dec. 16.

Applicants must bring a photo ID, a current piece of mail with their name and address and birth certificates for each child in their household. Those without a birth certificate can get a letter from their child's school.
