UWS ROUND-UP: Soccer team takes two from Martin Luther

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer team played a total of 119 minutes, and scored eight goals Saturday as they finished up a previous contest and completed another against the Martin Luther Knights Saturday in New Ulm, Minn.

The first game was the last 29 minutes of the two teams’ first matchup of the year that was postponed from Sept. 23 after a lighting hazard. The Yellowjackets came into this game already ahead 5-0 and ended up adding two goals in the final 29 minutes. Leonardo Paredes scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute, and was followed by Pontus Taavemark, who scored his first career goal on a header after Miguel Ocampo sent a corner kick into the box.

In the regularly scheduled game, Jon Bucklew scored two goals as UWS overcame an early deficit to defeat Martin Luther College 6-1.

The Knights (5-8 overall, 4-4 UMAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second minute before the Yellowjackets (9-6-1, 6-1-1) stormed back to score four times in the first half.

Bucklew netted his fifth of the season in the 11th minute, then Eric Watson and Blake Doyea tallied an amazing seven seconds apart for a two-goal advantage.

Jorge Silva closed the first-half scoring before Bucklew and Miguel Ocampo concluded the scoring with second-half goals.

The ’Jackets fired 23 shots in the second outing, and played great defense in the second half, not allowing a shot from the Knights. Dalton VonKaenel made three saves in 85 minutes, and Brandon Johnson found his first action of the season with five minutes in goal.

UWS closes out the rest of their regular season at home, starting at 3:15 p.m. today against the Northwestern Eagles at NBC Sports Complex.

UWS swept UMAC foe Martin Luther College on Saturday, posting a 25-14, 25-20, 25-17 victory at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

Brylee Colligan led the Yellowjackets (15-9 overall, 9-3 UMAC) with nine kills and Emily VerWay totaled 35 set assists. Mackenzie Dahlin’s 17 digs paced the UWS defense.

Martin Luther (13-12, 8-4) hit just .035 for the match compared to UWS’ .245 percentage.

UWS plays at Northwestern at 7 p.m. today and hosts Minnesota Morris at noon Saturday.

Women’s soccer

Morgan Hill’s goal in the third minute of overtime gave Martin Luther a 1-0 victory over UWS Saturday in New Ulm, Minn.

Goalie Bailey Henderson did her best in keeping the game scoreless with 10 saves for UWS (3-10-1, 2-5-1) until Hailey Johnson sent the ball into the penalty area and Hill knocked it in off her knee for her sixth of the season for the Knights (7-4-2, 6-1-1).

The ’Jackets got off eight shots in the game, including three from Liza Shelquist, two from Britt Zieroth and one apiece from  Emma Street and former Superior Spartan Hailey Kontny.

The Yellowjackets host Northwestern at 1 p.m. today at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Cross country

The UWS men finished 12th and the women 19th at UW-Oshkosh’s Kollege Town Invitational Saturday in Winneconne.

Former Superior Spartan Evan Walpole led the UWS with a 46th-place time of 26:55.7.

UWS finished with 313 points in the 21-team event, which was good enough to place first among UMAC teams.

Augustana (Ill.) took first place with a score of 96, host UW-Oshkosh placed second at 107, and Olivet Nazarene combined for 116 to take third.

Other runners for UWS were Rand Bieri, 52nd in 27:02.8; Sam Smith, personal best 27:18.2 for 69th; and Eddie Carlson, season-best 28:39.6 for 171st place.

Three runners set personal-best times, Henry Seeb, 28:40.5 to take 173rd; Nick Nemec, 30:11.9 to place 244th; and Tyler Finger, 275th in 31:08.2.

The UWS women had four season-best times and two personal-best times in the 24-team 6,000-meter race.

Kelli Praska was the best finisher for UWS, 61st with a season-best of 24:43.3.

She was followed by Mathea Brink, personal-best by 1:06 at 26:00.5 and 142nd place; Ali Manthey, 153rd at 26:09.3; and Michaela Ruhman and Taylor Joyal, 204th and 234th with 27:00.4 and 27:33.8. Hannah Kivela rounded out the lineup for Superior, and was able to break the 30-minute mark with a 29:44.8 and 301st place.

St. Norbert took first place with a 93 points.

This meet marked the end of the regular season for the Yellowjackets, who will next compete in the UMAC Championships Oct. 28.
