SPARTAN ROUND-UP: Soccer team plays to scoreless tie with Ashland

The Superior High School boys soccer team played to a scoreless double-overtime tie with the Ashland Oredockers Thursday night at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Spartans, who defeated Ashland 6-1 in its season opener on Aug. 24, is now 12-1-3 on the season.

Superior’s Cal Berti and Ashland’s Tyler Heino both finished with 11 saves.

The Oredockers are now 7-6-5 overall, 0-4-2 in the Lake Superior Conference.

The Spartans will play a make-up game at 6 p.m. today at Spooner.

Saturday’s home game with Hayward has been canceled.

The WIAA playoffs area scheduled to begin on Oct. 17.

Volleyball

The Spartans finished in fourth place at Saturday’s Esko Tournament.

Superior went 1-2 during pool play, defeating Proctor but losing to Esko and Mora.

The Spartans then lost to Hermantown 2-0 (25-17, 25-19) in the third-place match.

Mora defeated Duluth Denfeld 2-1 in the championship match.

The Spartans, who hosted Hermantown Monday night, host Rice Lake today (Tuesday) and play at Cloquet Thursday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.

Cross Country

The Spartans competed in the 67th Annual Swain Invitational Saturday at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth.

The SHS boys finished in 20th place among 23 teams and the Superior girls were 18th out of 20.

St. Michael-Albertville won both team titles, while Cloquet’s Aidan Ripp won the boys race in 17 minutes, 43.5 seconds, and St. Michael-Albertville’s Ali Weimer was the fastest girl with a time of 20:13.9.

Draden Jensen led the SHS boys, finishing 45th in 19:20.4, and Jennifer Nummi finished 77th in 23:47.7 for the Spartan girls.

Up next for Superior is the Lake Superior Conference meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Far Par Golf Course in Duluth.

The WIAA sectional meet is Oct. 21 at Menomonie.
