Superior Hampton Inn poised to open

Maria Lockwood Left to right, Lily Kline and Linda Cadotte with the city of Superior’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department tour the Hampton Inn in Superior with Kent Oliver, chairman of Oliver Properties and 3rd District City Councillor Warren Bender June 6. Oliver said he expects the four-story hotel to open June 26.

A few local Rotarians got a sneak peek last week inside Superior's Hampton Inn, currently under construction. The color schemes and tiles evoked lake themes, and views from the fourth floor were expansive.

"This is huge for the city of Superior to have this," said Warren Bender, who also represents the city's 3rd Council District.

The 83-room hotel, built in the footprint of the former Days Inn near Holiday Inn Express, won't be done in time for the Grandma's Marathon crowds.

"We should be opening up in a couple weeks," said Kent Oliver, chairman of Oliver Properties, which owns the inn.

Recent rainy weather has caused setbacks, but it's getting close to completion, Oliver said, giving a tentative opening date of June 26.

"We're finishing up the carpet and the tile; we've got the computers in, the office is done," Oliver said. "We're training staff, fired up the laundry equipment and the elevator, so it's getting down to the end."

During last week's peek, the pool was full. The outside patio was close to completion. Plastic-wrapped mattresses were placed in many of the rooms, art hung on walls and number plaques featuring photos were affixed outside each room.

Groundbreaking for the Hampton Inn took place in July 2016. The hotel aims to offer bigger rooms, taller ceilings and all the current amenities hotel-goers expect, including a spacious workout room. It will employ a team of 26, although Oliver said at the groundbreaking it could employ as many as 40 during the busy summer season.
