SHS soccer team closes regular season with win
The Superior High School girls soccer team ended the regular season Thursday with a 4-3 win over the Rice Lake Warriors.
The Spartans, in their first season as member of the Big Rivers Conference, went into halftime with the score tied 1-1. Rice Lake took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes into the second half, but Superior came back to take a 3-2 lead.
The Warriors then scored again to leave the game knotted at 3-3 with five minutes left in regulation.
“The last five minutes was fun to watch,” said Len Albrecht, SHS head coach. “They played some of their best soccer of the year and they put in a goal just over the fingertips of the Rice Lake goalie with 45 seconds left in the game.”
Kathryn Polkinghorn scored the winning goal for Superior with an assist from Josie Manning.
Also scoring for the Spartans were Niya Wilson in the first half, and Erin Walpole and Kennedy Grimstad less than eight minutes apart in the second half.
Walpole and Manning finished with two assists apiece for Superior, and goalie Sam Young had 14 saves in the win.
Superior received the No. 8 seed for the upcoming WIAA Division 1 girls soccer playoffs and will face No. 1 Eau Claire Memorial at 2 p.m. Thursday. The winner will play Eau Claire North or Stevens Point in the regional finals Saturday.
