Celebrate National Dairy Month

Beth Meyers

As many of you are aware, June is National Dairy Month. This is a great opportunity for everyone in the state to celebrate and thank our state’s world-class dairy farmers and cheesemakers. These hardworking individuals are family, friends and neighbors and they are the fabric of our rural economies.

The contributions of the dairy and agriculture industries to Wisconsin’s economy are simply staggering. Wisconsin’s 1.3 million dairy cows produced nearly 30 billion pounds of milk last year, with Wisconsin’s cheesemakers making 3 billion pounds of cheese. In all, dairy farming produced $45.4 billion in economic impact for the state, part of $88.3 billion in overall agricultural impact.

Wisconsin doesn’t just make the most cheese, we make the best. At the World Championship Cheese Contest earlier this year, Wisconsin cheesemakers dominated the competition, winning 38 gold medals — more than four times more medals than any other state or country!

So Wisconsin truly is the Dairy State. It is always such a pleasure to visit the farms of our area and meet with the families that mean so much to Wisconsin. During Dairy Month, I encourage everyone that has a chance to visit a local farm for a Dairy Breakfast. These events are a great opportunity to connect with the hard-working farmers that form the fabric of our communities and the backbone of the state’s workforce. Information about other events in our area or throughout the state can be found at

The hard-working Wisconsinites in agriculture and dairy truly are a beacon of industry for the state. They were important to helping Wisconsin grow and thrive in the past, and there is no doubt they will continue to do so in the future.
