UPDATED: Phillips sixth in Spartan Invite

The Superior High School cross country team hosted its own Spartan Invitational Thursday evening at the Nemadji Golf Course.

The Spartan girls finished in third place the boys were fourth.

Ashland won the girls team title and Cloquet was the boys champion.

Hibbing’s Emily Tromp won the girls race with a time of 20 minutes, 11.5 seconds.

Sophomore Audrey Phillips was the fastest Spartan, finishing sixth in 21:11.7.

Isaac Boedigheimer of Cloquet won the boys race in 16:43.9.

Foster Stromgren (18:32.9) and Ty Christianson (18:41.4) were the top Spartans, finishing 11th and 13th, respectively.

The Spartans run again at 4 p.m. today at Rice Lake.

Boys Soccer

Jarrett Kallinen scored his second goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Spartan boys soccer team lost 3-1 to Proctor Thursday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Derek Dahlgren and Zach Cooper scored second-half goals to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Rails to the Lake Superior Conference win.

Winning goalie Michael Petoletti made seven saves.

Logan Kittelson assisted on Kallinen’s goal and Cal Berti had seven saves for Superior.

The Spartans (1-5-1 overall, 0-3 LSC) host Rice Lake at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and play at Grand Rapids at 7 p.m. Thursday.

SPARTAN SPIN: Kittelson leads Superior in scoring with 10 goals and two assists. Robert Severin is next with one goal and five assists and Kallinen now has two goals and one assists. Kade Walpole and Blake Hanson have also scored goals and Maverick Peterson and Caden Tchop have an assist each.

Girls Tennis

The Spartans fell to the Hermantown Hawks 5-2 Thursday in Hermantown.

Superior’s Hannah Thul won the No. 1 singles match and twin sister, Allie Thul, won the No. 2 match.

Hannah Thul defeated Bailey O’Connell 6-4, 6-4 and Allie Thul won 6-3, 6-2 over Reilly Albert.

The Spartans host Duluth Marshall at 4:15 p.m. today.

Girls Swimming

The Spartans had a busy week, coming up short Thursday at Virginia then hosting the Spartan relays on Saturday.

Erin Walpole was a three-time winner for Superior in its 55-44 loss at Virginia.

She won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke and then teamed with Alysha Johnson, Carlee Noonan and Kate Lisak to win the medley relay.

Noonan also won the 100 butterfly and was a member of the winning 400 free relay with Taylor Amundson, Lisak and Katelyn Stebner.

Duluth East won the Spartan Relays with 71 points. Ladysmith was second with 58 points and the host Spartans finished seventh with 27 points.

The Spartans top finish came in the diving relay where Natalie Noble and Alicia LeSage finished in third place.

Superior swims again at 12:45 p.m. Saturday at the Chippewa Falls Invitational.
