UWS softball and baseball teams open play in WIAC

The University of Wisconsin-Superior softball and baseball teams opened play in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with mixed success Thursday.

The Yellowjacket softball team split a doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point, while the baseball team lost a pair of UW-Whitewater.


UWS rebounded from a 6-3 loss with a 3-1 win in nine innings against the Pointers at McCarty Memorial Field.

The Yellowjackets fell behind 5-0 early in the opener before Megan Nelson hit a three-run home run to cut the lead to two.

UWS pitcher Sarah Hendrickson of Duluth allowed six runs on six hits in 31/3 innings. Miranda Morrison allowed three runs and six hits for the Pointers.

Superior had six hits. Besides Nelson’s home run, Katie Wilke, Brittany Thomfohrda, Sally Linzmeier, Kristen Haider and Sasha Fjeran had a single apiece.

Jordon Schreiner and Paige Allen homered and Katie Uhlenbrauck hit a two-run double for the Pointers.

UWS fell behind again in the second game but Haider’s solo home run tied the game in the top of the seventh and sent the game to extra innings.

In the ninth, Shelly Misco drove in Taylor Johnson, and Nicole Weigman scored on an error by right fielder Jordan Schreiner.

Macy Hanson earned the win in relief, allowing three hits and striking out four for UWS (15-5 overall, 1-1 WIAC). Sarah Hendrickson allowed an unearned run on five hits in the first 4 2/3 innings.

Sydney Gorges allowed three runs and seven hits in 8 2/3 innings for UWSP (7-12, 1-1).

Misco had two of Superior’s seven hits in game two. Also for, UWS, Fjeran doubled and Nelson and Nicole Weigman singled.


UWS lost 9-1 and 7-2 in a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Whitewater.

Alex Quinones gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead in the opener with his second home run of the season but the lead didn’t last for long as the Warhawks scored twice in the bottom of the inning and ended matters with a five-run eighth inning.

UWS also got two singles from Derek Cagle and a single each from Sam Holden and Alex Petroski.

Lake Bachar allowed five hits and struck out five in seven innings for the Warhawks (12-1 overall, 2-0 WIAC).

Damian Wiblin and Trevor Stone pitched for UWS, allowing 16 hits with five strikeouts.

Brady Flaherty hit a two-run homer to start off the second game but again UWS (3-11, 0-2) couldn’t hold the lead.

Mikole Pierce and Casey Power each had three hits for Whitewater, with Pierce hitting a two-run homer among his five RBIs.

Flaherty also singled for UWS, Matt Vold singled twice and Holden and Jordan Koepp had a hit apiece.

Grant Schneider, Christian Hall and Riley Grandson pitched for UWS, allowing nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

UWS plays at UW-Milwaukee Tuesday and Carroll Wednesday. The Yellowjackets return to WIAC action with doubleheaders at UW-Stevens Point on April 11 and 12.
