The Superior High School volleyball and cross country teams were in action last week.

The Spartan volleyball team finished in sixth place at the Esko Tournament and the runners took part in the Lake Superior Conference Meet at the Chequamegon Bay Golf Club in Ashland.

Volleyball

In Esko on Saturday the Spartans defeated Moose Lake-Willow River 2-0 and lost to Cloquet 2-0 in pool play, then lost to South Ridge 2-0 in the fifth-place game.

Cloquet defeated Esko 2-0 in the championship match.

The Spartans also lost to Cloquet 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-16) Thursday night in the SHS gym.

For the Spartans, Nicole Sorensen had 10 set assists, Sage Olson had four kills and Abbie DeMeyer had four digs.

Cloquet (17-4, 5-0 LSC) was led by Kassidy Steen, 13 kills; Anna Hansmeyer, 13 kills; Sami Westendorf, 16 set assists, 14 digs and five kills; Alex Oakes, 18 set assists and six kills; and Callie Holm, 16 digs.

The Spartans play at Duluth Denfeld at 7 p.m. today.

Cross Country

The SHS girls finished in second place and the boys were seventh in the LSC meet Thursday in Ashland.

The Ashland Oredockers won the girls team title, and Proctor beat out Cloquet by two points to win the boys title.

The Superior girls were led by Audrey Phillips (16:39.2) and Isabella Evavold (16:47.6), who finished in 10th and 11th place, respectively.

Anja Maijala of  Cloquet won the girls race in 15:10.2.

Jacob Kennedy (18:07.9) and Brendan Crayne (18:11.3) were the top SHS boys, finishing in 19th and 20th place, respectively.

Cloquet’s Isaac Boedigheimer won the race in 16:12.8.

Superior will run in the Proctor Invitational at 4 p.m. today.
