The victim of a drowning in Lake Superior waters off the Apostle Islands has been identified as a 15-year-old Odanah boy.
Chris Smith, chief of protection for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, declined to name the victim, but an obituary in the Ashland Daily Press identified him as Wasaysee Mayotte.
The obituary said Mayotte, who also went by “Flash of Lightning” and “Wild Bear in Menominee,” was going into his sophomore year at Ashland High School. It said he died while swimming when he was caught in a rip current.
Smith said the victim was among several youths who were playing in the waves off of Stockton Island at Julian Bay on Wednesday afternoon when currents pulled him into deep water. The site is about 15 miles northeast of Bayfield.
Rescuers found the victim’s body after a five-hour search in 8-foot waves, according to the National Park Service. A small-craft advisory had been posted at the time of the incident.
