UWS workers, supporters rally Saturday

Supporters of University of Wisconsin-Superior custodians and grounds crew members threatened with losing their jobs to outsourcing rally on Saturday in Superior.

State labor leaders will launch the rally at 11 a.m. outside Superior Public Library.  The crowd then will march to “Old Main” on campus where UWS employees and community members will speak.

UWS administrators sent “at risk notices” to the front-line employees earlier this summer.  Since then, the workers and their union have been building support as they fight the UW System’s scheme to solve budget woes on the backs of its lowest paid employees.  Earlier this month, the Superior City Council passed an advisory resolution in support of the UWS custodians and grounds grew.

“Since the news broke, we’ve received an incredible amount of support.  People from all over are rallying around our cause because they understand how outsourcing jobs like ours can hurt an entire community” said Tom Van Overmeiren, a long-time UWS custodian and member of AFSCME Local 42.
