Welding sparks fire at grain elevator

Superior firefighters responded to a possible fire around 6 p.m. Thursday at the General Mills Elevators S and X, 2205 Winter St.

Maintenance operations at the grain storage facility resulted in welding sparks igniting an expansion fabric membrane on the grain bin and some residual dust that continued to smolder.

Fire crews climbed to the seventh floor and hoisted a hose to that height. Water was supplied by drafting from a nearby slip, feeding a pumper to lift the water where crews worked to extinguish the smoldering fabric and dust, said Superior Battalion Chief Vern Johnson in a news release.

He said damage was limited to the cost of replacing the fabric expansion joint and some minor water damage.

Four Engines and one command car responded to the incident, and cleared the scene shortly after 9 p.m.

Crews returned around 10:30 p.m. to extinguish one more smoldering hot spot discovered by employees at the facility. Crews cleared the scene at 12:13 a.m.

No one was injured, Johnson said.
