Superior man accused of holding woman for a year

A Superior man accused of breaking a woman's jaw and threatening to shoot her father will appear in Douglas County Circuit Court Wednesday.

Anthony J. Machones, 22, faces felony charges of false imprisonment, threats to injure and substantial battery. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the criminal complaint:

The woman Machones is accused of beating during a domestic abuse incident was brought to a Duluth hospital Dec. 8 with a broken jaw. Her parents and the emergency room doctor told Superior Police Detective Jack Curphy the woman said the injury was caused by Machones. The doctor also observed numerous bruises and bite marks on the woman.

The woman's parents said their daughter had been prevented from leaving the suspect's residence for more than a year, during which time he had been very hostile toward them. Their daughter was not even allowed to speak to them on the telephone unless Machones was listening in.

At one point Machones threatened to shoot the woman's father.

When questioned by Curphy, Machones admitted to slapping or punching the woman a number of times over the past year, as well as biting her. He said he struck the woman in the face with his hand. Although her face was swollen and her jaw uneven, he told Curphy, he believed she was all right because she was able to eat.

Machones denied holding the woman at the residence against her will. He told Curphy he asked her to leave him numerous times because of his violent temper.

The Superior man made his initial appearance this week in Douglas County Circuit Court. Cash bail of $10,000 was ordered with conditions of no contact with the victim, her parents or their residence, no possession of a controlled substance and no possession of firearms or dangerous weapons. Machones remains in custody at the Douglas County Jail.
