Superior man faces sex charge
A Superior man accused of sexually assaulting a vulnerable adult in her home made an initial appearance this week in Douglas County Circuit Court.
Thomas Carl Johnson, 62, faces one count of second-degree sexual assault for an incident that took place in a Superior residence on July 19.
The victim's sister told Superior police that she had entered the woman's bedroom and found her being sexually assaulted by Johnson, who is one of the woman's caregivers. According to the complaint, the alleged victim has cerebral palsy and is mentally retarded, so she cannot communicate her wishes or self-report.
Johnson told officers that he did not have sexual contact with the woman. He was released on a $5,000 signature bond on the condition that he have no contact with the woman he is accused of assaulting or her residence. If convicted, Johnson faces up to 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 5.
