Two dead, two critically injured in Hibbing fire

Two adults are dead and two children suffered life-threatening injuries in an early morning house fire in Hibbing on Tuesday.

The Hibbing Fire Department said it was called to a fire at 212 42nd St. East at 1:37 a.m.

While en route to the scene, crews were updated that there was heavy fire on the back of the home and that there were several people trapped inside.

Firefighters arrived at 1:46 a.m. to find heavy fire in the house, and said they immediately deployed rescue tactics with a hose crew and rescue crew. One juvenile was already out of the house and in stable condition.

Within minutes the rescue team had removed two additional juveniles and two adults from the burning house. All four did not have a pulse and were not breathing.

The two children were resuscitated by fire crews and transported by Chisholm Ambulance to Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing; they were later flown to a level 1 trauma center with life-threatening injuries.

Crews were unable to revive the two adults.

The one other juvenile who was outside of the home at the time crews arrived was transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Fairview Range Medical Center.

The names and ages of the victims are being withheld until family members have been notified.

The fire was deemed out at 4:39 a.m. The cause of the fire was not immediately noted. The Hibbing Fire Marshal is investigating the fire with the assistance of the State Fire Marshal's office.

Temperatures hovered at 20 below zero at the time of the fire with wind chill levels near 35 below zero.

"This is a heavy day for the Hibbing Fire Department and we send our condolences to the family of this terrible tragedy. Please take the extra time today to ensure your smoke alarms are working and that you safeguard your home of fire hazards," the department noted in a statement,

Hibbing firefighters received help from Chisholm Fire, Chisholm Ambulance, Keewatin Fire, Clinton Fire, Virginia Fire and EMS, Fayal Fire, Nashwauk Ambulance, the Hibbing Police Department, Hibbing Public Utilities and Hibbing Public Works.
