Sheriff identifies vehicle found in harbor

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has identified a vehicle dredge from the harbor by workers from RJS Construction.

According to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office, the vehicle, a 1978 Ford pickup was reported stolen to Duluth police in August 1990.

RJS Construction workers were working in the area between Midwest Energy and the General Mills Elevator “O” slip, in about 26 feet of water when the vehicle was found.

Wisconsin license plate and a vehicle identification number were recovered from the debris.

Investigators were able to trace the VIN number back to SafeCo Insurance Company, indicating they may have paid off on a claim.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office closed the investigation after classify the incident as a recovered stolen vehicle.
