An attempt to locate a man with a gun in Superior on Sunday afternoon ended when the man was found dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound not far from his car.

Superior police had been alerted to look for Michael James Salus Jr. at around 1:45 p.m. by Duluth police, who had been contacted by the man’s girlfriend, said to Deputy Chief Matt Markon with the Superior Police Department.

Officers found his car parked on Billings Drive south of Badger Drive about 25 minutes later. Because they were investigating a man with a gun call, the police mustered help from the Superior Police Department Emergency Response Team, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies and K-9 team. The Civil Air Patrol and a DNR plane out of Rhinelander equipped with a forward looking infrared camera were also requested. Salus’ body was found about 4:30 p.m. prior to the arrival of the DNR plane and before the Civil Air Patrol had taken off and air units were called off, Markon said. Officers at the ski trail parking lot on Wyoming Avenue and North 28th Street were also alerting those returning from the trail about a possible man with a gun in the area.

Markon said it appears Salus parked his car, climbed over a nearby snowbank and shot himself.
