One man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting on Ripley Spur Road in Sarona, according to the Washburn County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's department was called to N1930 Ripley Spur Road shortly after midnight Sunday.
The caller, the 48-year-old suspect, reported he just shot someone multiple time, but claimed he did so in self defense.
When deputies and officers with the Shell Lake and Spooner police departments and Wisconsin State Patrol arrived on the scene, they found Michael T. Elliott, 31, of N1712 Ripley Spur Road lying face down with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds to his body. Medical personnel with North Ambulance could not detect signs of life. The Washburn County coroner pronounced Elliott dead at the scene.
An autopsy will be performed by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office in St. Paul to determine the exact cause of death.
Sheriff Terry Dryden contacted District Attorney Mike Bitney for a search warrant and the suspect in the shooting was detained on probable cause of first-degree intentional homicide. Criminal charges are pending.
The incident remains under investigation.
