Farmers’ markets kick off season in Superior

Farmers’ markets in Superior open for the season this week starting Wednesday at the Superior Downtown Farmers’ Market.

Held in the north parking lot of the Superior Public Library, the downtown market runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday.

Kick off at the Barker’s Island Farmers’ Market follows 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot near the SS Meteor.

“The highlight of the farmers’ markets, of course, is fresh, locally grown produce even this early in the season but so much more is also available,” said Sue Ann Dumke, market manager.

To start out the season, growers will have fresh spring produce such as scallions, lettuce and other greens. Due to the late spring, asparagus is still available.

Home gardeners will find healthy tomato, pepper, cucumber and other vegetable plants along with flowering annuals and perennials. Baked goods, handmade chocolates, jam, mustards, maple syrup, honey and homemade soap are some of the specialties available.

Hearty offerings from the farmers include eggs and meat. Both markets are open through October, rain or shine.
