Superior woman provides hurricane relief

A retired educator from Superior was among the American Red Cross volunteers in the path of Hurricane Maria.

Diane Dunder is volunteering in St. Thomas, which was previously damaged by Hurricane Irma. She flew to the U.S. Virgin Islands Sept. 10 to help with relief efforts. Dan Williams, executive director of the American Red Cross Serving Northern Minnesota, said they got their first call from Dunder Thursday.

"It's a mess down there," Williams said.

The boat trip to St. Thomas, Dunder told Williams, was "rocking and rolling" due to the storm that had just passed.

The biggest building left intact in St. Thomas has been turned into a shelter, according to Williams, and that's where Dunder is working. Members of the U.S. Navy recently visited the shelter to repair the roof and dump water out of the fluorescent ceiling light casings.

Both electricity and hot water on the island are intermittent. Even access to food has been variable.

"It's improving every day, but it's not good," Williams said.

Dunder also sent a few pictures, including one of Red Cross volunteers gathered on the deck of a yacht. The owner of the yacht allowed them to use his satellite connection to send texts, Williams said.

There are five volunteers from the American Red Cross Serving Northern Minnesota currently serving in the Virgin Islands. Dunder is serving a three-week deployment in St. Thomas.

Local relief efforts
