Hibbing police identify business owner killed

HIBBING, Minn. — The male found dead at a residence near The Bottle Shop Monday afternoon has been identified as the business’s owner.

Brian Joseph Nelson, 60, of Hibbing, died as the result of homicidal violence as determined by Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Hibbing Police Department stated Tuesday evening.

A longtime Hibbing resident, Nelson was described by family and friends as a kind, caring person. They, along with customers, had a hard time fathoming why someone would want to hurt Nelson.

As of 7 p.m. Tuesday, HPD did not have anyone in custody and was asking anyone with information to contact them.

Officers responded to a report of a deceased male at 4:40 p.m. Monday at The Bottle Shop. Law enforcement found Nelson under “suspicious circumstances” and immediately barricaded the residence, store and scene.

HPD investigators requested assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), which arrived on scene Monday evening.

How Nelson died or what may have motivated the incident were not released. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
