Bemidji man escapes vehicle before it's engulfed in flames

COLFAX, N.D. — A Bemidji man escaped his vehicle Saturday, June 3 before it started on fire after it crashed into a bridge, entered the median and crossed lanes of traffic.

Georgene Gross, 73, totaled his 2005 Dodge Caravan after becoming "distracted inside the vehicle," reports Sgt. Luke Hendrickson, with the North Dakota State Patrol, in a news release issued Saturday afternoon. Gross began crashing into barriers around 1 p.m., Hendrickson said, when he was traveling southbound on Interstate 29, about 4 miles south of Colfax.

Gross was taken to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo for minor injuries he received after "the van struck the guardrails of the bridge four times, crossing both lanes of traffic each time, before leaving the roadway entering the median," Hendrickson states in the release.

Hendrickson did not indicate in the release whether or not they believe alcohol played a factor in the crash.
