Farmers market opens for the season on Barker's Island
Barker's Island Farmers Market opens for the season at 9 a.m. Saturday.
"We have several growers are utilizing high tunnels so they will have fresh, early spring produce along with our folks who specialize in perennial and annual plants," said Sue Ann Dumke, market manager.
The plants available at the market are favorites of local growers who have tested varieties that perform well in our northern climate; they offer advice on how to handle them when you get home, she said.
Early produce at the market includes spinach, lettuce, kale and rhubarb. New items are added each week as the season progresses, including locally raised beef and pork.
Local honey, maple syrup, jams, jellies, mustards and other condiments add an extra touch. Breads, cookies, muffins and cakes are some of the baked goods available each week, and artisans also make natural soaps, skin care products and household cleaners.
The market is held 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday through October in the parking lot adjacent to the Superior Festival Park and SS Meteor on Barker's Island. For weekly updates, visit Barker's Island Farmers Market on Facebook.
The Superior Downtown Farmers Market kicks off May 31. With the Belknap Street reconstruction project underway, the market moves to 1215 Banks Ave., the parking lot adjacent to the World of Wheels Skate Center. The downtown market runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday through October.
The Superior Business Improvement District also offers craft sales, lunch and entertainment at the Superior Downtown Farmers Market, which has its own Facebook page for updates.
