Taking stock of spiritual condition
Genetic research has advanced greatly of late, making it possible for science to determine the potential influence our individual genes can have in our life. It has become possible for people to have their DNA tested, to reveal their ancestry from the past and what health risks might lay ahead.
Would you want to know all the information these reports reveal? Knowing one’s ancestry may not be threatening, but for some, knowing the likelihood of developing certain diseases could be different. Some see this information as good because they can take preventive actions against the disease. Others prefer ignorance, choosing to deal with the disease, if and when it develops.
What about our spiritual life? Although genetics reveal nothing about our spiritual condition, would you want to know your standing with God? If you could know that your sins are forgiven and you are His child, would you want this information?
The Apostle Paul teaches that God’s Spirit testifies to the believer’s spirit, informing them that they are His child (Romans 8:16). If we seek God in our life by confessing our sins, He forgives us and adopts us as His child. When this happens, He indwells us with His Spirit. It is this presence that lets us know that we are God’s.
Examining our DNA can and will reveal many things about our life; especially as genetic research develops, but only the Spirit of God can reveal our spiritual condition. This he willingly does for everyone who asks.
