Slippery conditions lead to 6 car pileup on East Second Street

Superior Telegram

A six-car accident along East Second Street slowed traffic to a snail’s pace along U.S. Highway 2/53 south of Superior on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on East Second Street near 48th Avenue East

According to the accident report filed by Superior Police Officer Erick Flood:

The driver of a northbound car lost control and crossed the centerline, colliding with a southbound vehicle. The southbound vehicle then crossed the center line and hit the car behind the northbound car. That car, in turn, was struck in the rear by the vehicle behind it. A fifth vehicle came to a stop behind that car, but was struck in the rear by a sixth vehicle.

Four people were injured, but only one required medical transport by Gold Cross Ambulance.

Flood indicated in the report that the road conditions were slippery and the driver of the northbound car, a 19-year-old Hayward woman, was the cause of the accident because she failed to have control of her vehicle.

No citations have been issued, according to the report.

The accident occurred in the section of road that had been reduced to the two southbound lanes so Superior Water, Light and Power crews could make repairs to a broken water line below the northbound lanes. That repair work is expected to be complete by noon today, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
