Superior police arrest Minnesota fugitive

Police in Superior trying to arrest a fugitive from Minnesota found themselves in a struggle Wednesday. At one point, the suspect tried to grab an officer's gun.

The Superior Police Department reported Thursday that its investigators, along with those from Douglas County, spotted Todd Richard Carter, 39, on North 14th Street as he entered a vehicle. He was wanted on a warrant issued in May after failing to appear in Carlton County court on a drug charge.

Police followed the car to a nearby parking lot at Belknap and Cedar streets and approached Carter as he got out of his vehicle. Police said he attempted to put keys into the ignition and a struggled began. He eventually exited through the passenger side of the vehicle.

A foot chase resulted in officers tackling Carter near North 14th Street. Police said Carter reached for an officer's gun and fought for three minutes before he was subdued.

He was sent to a hospital for medical treatment and then booked in Douglas County Jail.

He is expected to be formally charged today for attacking officers and attempting to disarm one.
