ECM's Comeau carries Old Abes past Spartans

The Superior High School football team got the start it wanted.

But after that it was all Eau Claire Memorial as the visiting Old Abes defeated the Spartans 43-13 Friday night at Ole Haugsrud Field.

Doing most of the damage for the Old Abes was running back Taylor Comeau, who rushed for 197 yards, including four first-half touchdowns.

The loss drops the Spartans to 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in the Big Rivers Conference. The Old Abes remain undefeated at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the BRC.

Superior struck first in the game when sophomore quarterback Joe Reichert and senior split end Mike VanMassenhove connected on a 58-yard touchdown pass. John LeDoux kicked the extra point to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead with 1:39 remaining in the first quarter.

"It was just an option pass, something we work on every day," SHS coach Mike DeMeyer said. "Mike's a heck of an athlete and we have to get him the ball more. After that they started playing man on us, taking that away, and then they blitzed us more. They did a good job coaching and making adjustments to stop what was working for us."

ECM got that score back when Kevin Lorenze returned a Spartan punt 39 yards to the SHS 15-yard line and two plays later Comeau scored over the right side. Jefferson Dahl's kick tied the game at 7-7 with 9:15 left in the half.

Superior managed a nine-play 23-yard drive on its next possession, but just six plays after being forced to punt, Comeau scored again, this time from 7 yards. The missed extra point gave the Old Abes a 13-7 lead.

ECM got the ball back with 1:06 left in the half and eventually drove into Superior territory. But the drive came to an end as SHS senior Sean Graskey intercepted Mike Munger's pass with 2.9 seconds on the clock.

"The punt return and the long pass, those are the two plays that hurt us in the first half," DeMeyer said. "As much as we hate to admit it, they probably wore us down a little bit. No 23 is a heck of a back, but we also missed a lot of tackles, too."

In the third quarter it was all Comeau as he scored from 38 yards out on the first drive and then 10 minutes later scored from 1 yard out with 2:33 left in the third quarter.

Comeau rushed the ball 10 times for 96 yards on the two drives, including all 40 yards on the second scoring series.

Between Comeau's third-qaurter TDs, Eau Claire added a two-point safety to its total, taking a 30-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

It went to 37-7 with 9:28 remaining when a 10-play, 44-yard drive ended with Munger connecting with Dan Stein on a 5-yard TD pass.

The Spartans got that TD back on the next drive when Reichert snuck over from a yard out with 6:08 left. The drive lasted 10 plays and ate up 76 yards, including 38 yards from Addison Griffin and 29 more from Chris Blake.

Superior got the ball right back as Brian Pierpont stripped the ball from a ECM player on a on-side kick and Blake recovered at midfield.

But four plays later ECM's Lorenze intercepted a Reichert pass at the Old Abe 33.

The Old Abes added to their lead with 1:36 remaining on a 35-yard TD pass from David Donnellan to Taylor Aylesworth.

"One thing we can say about our kids is that they don't quit," DeMeyer said. "On the positive side we had a lot of younger kids in the game, about four or five sophomores at one time on defense. They're gaining experience and no matter what happens we're going to keep battling.

"The score doesn't indicate how close game was. We gave up a couple of big plays and we missed a lot of tackles, but we're going to keep fighting."

The Spartans are at Chippewa Falls at 7 p.m. Friday. The Cardinals are 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the BRC after defeating Eau Claire North 28-27 Friday night.

SPARTAN SPIN: SHS sophomore Marzette Turner blocked an ECM extra-point attempt in the fourth quarter. ... Griffin led the Spartans on the ground with 65 yards on 10 carries. Max Phillips had a team-high 11 tackles for the Spartans. VanMassenhove added six and Graskey, Ryan Gapske and Del Gander had four each.
