Superior woman with artificial heart dies

Mara Krysiak, the 21-year-old woman from Superior born with a genetic heart condition whose fight for her life inspired many throughout the Northland, died at 7 a.m. today, according to a family spokesperson.

Krysiak became the second person to receive an artificial heart implant at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee on Nov. 11. She had developed a blood infection more than a week ago.
