Funding available for emergency food and shelter

The Douglas County Emergency Food and Shelter Committee has been awarded $6,472 in federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

A local board made up of representatives from Catholic Charities Bureau, Red Cross, United Way, Douglas County, The Salvation Army, the Douglas County Ministerial Association and a person who has experienced homelessness will determine how the funds will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds made available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

The Douglas County Emergency Food and Shelter Committee has distributed emergency food and shelter funds previously to Catholic Community Services, Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse, Faith United Methodist Church, Northwest Wisconsin Community Services, Rural Care and Share, and The Salvation Army.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds can be submitted to Douglas County Emergency Food and Shelter Committee, c/o Catholic Charities Bureau, 1416 Cumming Ave., Superior, WI 54880, Attention, Brenda Osterlund. Catholic Charities Bureau serves as the chair of the Douglas County Emergency Food and Shelter Committee which also includes representatives from Douglas County government, the United Way, the Superior Ministerial Association, Red Cross, Salvation Army and other community agencies. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 6.
