The Lake Superior Zoo probably will reopen sometime after Wednesday, according to Zoological Society CEO Sam Maida. But when — and even if — the zoo’s popular polar bear and two seals will return from the Como Zoo in St. Paul is unknown.
The sawmills that buzzed away on the shore of the St. Louis River in Duluth are long since gone, but the legacy of debris they left on the bottom of what was called Cedar Yard Bay is still there. Federal and state funding is in place to remove the 460 pilings (some 100 tons) using giant equipment while the upper harbor is covered in ice.
