The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team defeated the College of St. Scholastica Saints 74-63 Monday night at the Reif Center in Duluth. The women’s game was the first game of a doubleheader between UWS and CSS. The Yellowjacket men completed the sweep with an 86-72 win in the nightcap.
Jarrod Peterson led the Yellowjackets with a game-high 19 points. Former Northwestern Tiger Aaron Corry was next, coming off the bench to score a career-high 15 points. Brendan Bauer added nine points and Bronson Byrne had six.
The Saints, who are making their second consecutive NCAA playoff appearance in just its fifth year as a program, earned the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference’s automatic qualifier. The Saints finished in a three-way tie for the conference title with Northwestern College and Greenville College (Ill.), but received the bid by way of a random draw.
The St. Norbert and St. Scholastica men’s and women’s hockey teams were left searching for a conference when UW-Superior, UW-Stout, UW-Stevens Point, UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire announced they would depart the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association after 2012-13 to form the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for men’s and women’s hockey.
